Vitrification is what happens when a clay body gets hot enough for its minerals to melt, fuse and close the pores between particles. The result is dense, glass-like porcelain that absorbs very little water.
“Vitrify” comes from the Latin vitrum, glass. It is the right word. At high enough temperatures, part of a porcelain body turns into glass, and that changes how the plate behaves for the rest of its life.
What happens in the kiln
- Water leaves. Moisture, then chemically bound water, is driven out of the clay.
- The flux melts. As temperatures climb, feldspar begins to melt into a glassy liquid.
- Pores close. That liquid flows into the gaps between particles, pulling the body tighter. The piece shrinks as it densifies.
- Crystals form. Fine, needle-like crystals called mullite grow within the body, adding strength.
- It cools as one. The glassy phase sets, locking everything into a dense, hard, low-porosity whole.
Why temperature matters
Lower-fired ceramics stop before this process is complete. They keep a network of tiny pores. Glaze may cover them, but chips, cracks and fine crazing let moisture, oils and odours in.
VITRO porcelain is fired at approximately 1,250°C, so the body can vitrify fully.
A vitrified plate doesn’t just resist stains. It gives them almost nowhere to go.
What it changes at the table
- Very low water absorption. Sauces, oils and dishwater stay on the surface, not in the body.
- Fewer stains and odours. Especially noticeable with turmeric, tea, coffee and curries.
- Easier cleaning. A dense surface is simpler to keep hygienic, which matters in commercial kitchens.
- Strength. A fully fired body is harder and more resistant to everyday knocks.
